Now that Spring has finally come, it is a time for planting and looking forward. The act of planting requires preparation, and once you’re able to put seed or roots in the earth, there’s a profound sense of accomplishment. It goes beyond getting a row complete, or checking another item off the list. Planting is an act of hope and care, essentially you’re planning to nurture something, or in some cases, you may even purposefully neglect something, but you still hope for the best. Mark Shepard uses the acronymn STUN, or Sheer Total Utter Neglect, for some of his plantings to emphasize the need for nature to sort out what’s best to grow.
